FROM WORD SEARCH TO WRITING

TARGET LEVEL: ALL LEVELS
WRITTEN BY: MS LALA

Teaching EC sometimes makes teachers lack of ideas of what to do next. Writing for them is not easy to conduct. It can be done seriously, with right pattern, only for higher levels, such as EC 5 or EC 6. in this technique, I will tell you ideas on how to weite a short passage with some steps. It took me two meetings to finish all of them.

First, make sure that you have taught Present Perfect tense or any other lesson target. The pattern I taught was “Have you……..?”. I made groups of Verb 3 in jumbled Word Search. It would be easier if you go to www.toolsforeducators.com. Just write down any verbs that you have introduced to class. Ask the students to search words hidden.

Later, from the list of words they find, construct questions starting with “Have you….?” Maje sure that they make questions that the answer would be Yes by other students. Here is the example:

  1. Have you listened to Roar by Katy Perry?
  2. Have you made cookies?
  3. Have you gone to Singapore?
  4. Have you slept in five star hotel?
  5. Have you read Famous Five novel?

After the students finish the questions, choose one of their friends to be interviewed with the list of questions. Tell them that they can continue asking further questions. For example:

  1. Have you listened to Roar by Katy Perry? Do you like the song? Do you have it in your playlist?
  2. Have you made cookies? Do you like making cookies? Did your mother help you?
  3. Have you gone to Singapore? When did you go there? Did you go there with your family?

It is possible for interviewee to answer “No”. Further questions can still be conducted.

  1. Have you slept in five star hotel? Where do you usually stay if you go out of town?
  2. Have you read Famous Five novel? What is your favorite book? What do you do fur fun if you don’t like reading?

What happened in class, some students asking me to make more than five questions with extraordinary ideas—questions that would get “No’ for an answer. For example:

  1. Have you gone to Jeruk Purut cemetery?
  2. Have you met a ghost?
  3. Have you slept in railway?
 LOL.

I just let them have the questions as long as they later make the report.
